Holly Schofield
Holly Schofield is a British Columbian science fiction writer whose work combines hard-won hope, careful research, and a keen interest in technology and natural processes. Based in the Southern Gulf Islands, she’s published over a hundred short stories in venues such as Lightspeed, Analog, Escape Pod, The Year’s Top Robot and AI Stories, and in Canadian anthologies such as Year’s Best Canadian Fantasy and Science Fiction and Tesseracts.
Holly’s fiction often explores how people adapt and find possibility under pressure. Her malaphor-filled short story “Call of the Wold,” in the acclaimed Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Summers anthology, takes place in a post-capitalist collective community where an introvert on the run must find their place. The story reflects a characteristic balance in her work: both the characters and the setting have a richness and depth that go beyond the tropes.
Much of her work leans toward environmental and optimistic speculative fiction. Interested in alternative energy and climate mitigation, many of her stories feature solarpunk’s blend of technological imagination and environmental awareness. At the centre of it all is a belief that speculative fiction can help explore new viewpoints, the benefits of cooperative action, and—naturally—very cool science.
