VCON has always been a family-friendly event, offering lower rates for youth 7-12 and free entry for kids under 7 and providing some programming sessions aimed at a younger audience. This year we’re also introducing the Kid Zone – a cordoned off area at the back of our large Hospitality Room with activities, toys and books to keep all of our VCON kids happy and amused, whether they are toddlers, elementary or middle-grade aged.
The Kid Zone will have paper, colouring books, crayons, pencil crayons stickers and stamps available for those who like to be creative. It will have wooden blocks and a Rubbermaid bucket full of LEGO bricks for those who like to build. It will have a collection of SF&F books for kids of all ages – board books for toddlers, picture books for early readers and short chapter books for middle-grade kids. It will even have some pillows and blankets available for building forts or for snuggling down to rest while someone reads them a book.
When “open for play”, one or more VCON volunteers will always be on hand allowing parents to grab a bite and take a break at a table elsewhere in the hospitality room. Or, as kids with a Youth badge (ages 7-12) are free to explore the convention without a nagging parent tagging along (as long as that parent has been left somewhere, safe, in the hotel), they can just deposit said parent at whatever boring old panel they want to see and then come to the Kid Zone on their own to explore what it has to offer.
Kid Zone Hours
The Kid Zone will be “open for play” from start of programming to 6:00 PM on Fri and Saturday and until 4:00 PM on Sunday.
