Something New in the ART SHOW

Something New in that ART SHOW

VCON’s Art Show features the work of mainly local artists working to themes related to science fiction and fantasy, This year’s Art Show will carry on that tradition, with slight differences to reflect the smaller setup and shorter duration.

What’s different at the Art Show?

FOR ART LOVERS AND ART BUYERS:

No bidding, just buying!

There will be no bidding, and once a piece is sold it goes with the buyer! Don’t think that this will make the Art Show a one-time stop, though – artists are encouraged to bring extra pieces, so if something gets sold and taken away, something else you might like may take its place!

This year, the Art Show will be conveniently located with the Artist Alley and Vendor space.

Please note that a bag check-in will be in effect for large bags and bags without zippers/closures.

FOR ARTISTS:

There will be no bidding and no auction at the end of the convention. This means items will not sell at low minimum bid prices and there is no need to wait to find out a piece’s final sale price.

At this time, with the exception of the Artist Guest of Honour, artists will be limited to ONE (1) display space per person and a maximum of 30 works per artist. If there is unsold space left closer to the Art Show, it will be offered for purchase to artists that have registered to the Art Show (on a lottery basis).

If the artist’s pieces do not all fit on their display space, the artist has the option to leave the extra artworks with the Art Show, and as pieces sell and are taken away, at the discretion and time permitting, Art Show staff will replenish the artist’s space with the extra artworks. Note that the Art Show Director will have the right to refuse to keep very fragile or bulky art pieces for replenishing, due to the limited space.

Since there will be no Print Shop, artists are permitted to have duplicate prints on their display space – each print is counted as one piece of the 30 maximum works.

Please note that there is a 10% commission for any artwork sold at the Art Show.

Note: While there are no defined rules for what is allowed and not allowed in terms of art content, VCON is a family-oriented convention. As such, please keep subject matter suitable for a general audience. If you are not sure if your art is suitable, please contact the Art Show Director. Also, artworks may be refused at the discretion of the Art Show Director.

See pocket program for specific times, or check at the art show room.VCON’s annual art show features the work of local artists. Works on display include paintings, sculpture, cartoons, and other objets d’art with some relationship to science fiction, fantasy, gaming, horror, and related themes. As much as we appreciate still life studies, for example, the still life must be within the genre.

Something new in the Art Gallery

For most of the 41 years VCON has been in existence, a major part of programming was the Sunday Art Auction which could last 4 plus hours and involve many works by the showing artists. However, over the past few years there has been a change in the buying habits of our convention attendees from bidding and taking works to auction to direct sales.

This year we are experimenting with a new method of offering works for sale; a combination of direct sale and a silent auction bid system.

Direct sale is just that – the price the artist wants is listed on the bid tag. You pay for the piece, we mark it sold, and that is that!

In the Silent Auction format, the artist has listed an opening bid, similar to previous years. The difference is that there is no limit to the number of bids accepted – as long as they are of at least $1 increment, and at close of bidding at 2 pm Sunday, the last bidder is the winner.

Gallery staff will monitor progress and add bid sheets as and where necessary.

By 3:00 pm Sunday, we hope to have all successful bidders purchases ready for payment and pickup in the gallery.

As usual, we will take cash and major credit cards.

We know you will enjoy the gallery and the demonstrations laid on this year, and invite you to look in particular for various ribbon award winners. Imagine being able to state that this piece hanging on your wall, or adorning the coffee table was chosen by a Guest of Honour as their particular favourite at VCON 41!

Join us as well for the Artist’s Reception on Friday evening between 6 and 8 pm. Rocket Ship Cookies will be available.

And finally, don’t forget to come and vote for your favourite artist. The Vancouver Art Gallery has again donated a one year family membership to be awarded to the Fan Choice Artist.

Art Show Bidding Rules

Please remember, when you place a bid, you are making a non-rescindable purchase contract with the artist. It cannot be rescinded.

To bid on a piece, fill in the bid sheet attached or adjacent to the piece in which you are interested. Required information consists of the bidder’s name (real or badge name), badge number and bid amount. Bids will be accepted in increments of $1 only. Highest bid wins.

Any single-bid pieces may be picked up and paid for when the art show closes on Sunday. The Art Show staff reserve the right to void any bid they deem not legitimate.

Direct Sales

Some pieces will have direct sales prices as well as minimum bid prices. If a piece has not yet been bid on, it can be purchased for the direct sale price.

Ribbon Award Prizes

Our judges will choose ribbon award winners in the following categories:

BEST USE OF COLOUR
BEST BLACK AND WHITE
MOST HUMOROUS
BEST USE OF THEME
BEST 3-D
BEST BODY OF WORK

FAN CHOICE is voted on by convention attendees.
And finally, we invite the Guests of Honour to award ribbons to their favourite pieces.

Artists’ Reception

VCON’s ‘Newest tradition’ allows members to meet and mingle with the exhibiting artists in a relaxed and informal setting. Join us to enjoy the art and the artists from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday evening, Sept 30th.

:00 PM to Print Shop

Here you can purchase prints of some of the work on display, as well as prints of other works by the artists. Please take every precaution to ensure prints are not damaged in any way. You are handling works of art!
