Four weeks to VCON 42!
We have so much going on that we’re going to recap just some of them as a list.
Here are 42 things about VCON 42:
- VCON 42, Vancouver’s science fiction & Fantasy Convention, is happening on 5 to 7 October 2018 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel.
- This year’s theme is The British Invasion: A Tribute to Douglas Adams and the British Influences on Science Fiction and Fantasy.
- VCON 42 is also hosting Canvention 38, the Canadian national science fiction & fantasy convention.
- Charles Stross, author of The Merchant Princes series and The Laundry Files series is our Author Guest of Honour.
- Ashley Mackenzie, Winner of the OCADU Program Medal for Illustration in 2013, is the Artist Guest of Honour.
- Amal El-Mohtar, Author of The Honey Month and Editor of the fantastic poetry quarterly Goblin Fruit, is the Canvention Guest of Honour.
- A number of areas and events are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. (See down this list for the details. Tell and invite your friends!)
- Canvention has the Aurora Awards Ceremony recognizing the best in Canadian science fiction and fantasy literary works. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- The Aurora Awards Dinner Theatre features “Distractingly Sexy” by scientist and Artistic Director Milly Mumford. *PUBLIC with ticket*
- The Art Show exhibits talented artists’ 2D and 3D work, with demonstrations and workshops. 20+ artists and counting. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- Art Show’s having a 4-Panel Comic Contest! Entries will be posted for all to see. No limit to entries per person! *FREE, PUBLIC*
- The multi-author Book Launch is an evening of food, drink, music, readings, and signings from local spec-fic authors. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- The Exhibit Hall has Dealers’ Room, Artists’ Alley, and Cyberspace areas all together for your shopping convenience. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- Dealers’ Room features local merchants who sell or make the finest in sci-fi and fantasy related goods. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- Artists’ Alley is a great place to meet artists creating work before your eyes and giving you a peek at their process. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- CyberSpace is the place to surf and network with the creators of online games, webcomics, podcasts, and more. *FREE, PUBLIC*
- Tabletop Games–free-play tables for board, card, roleplaying, miniature games; hosted tables with demos or roundtable discussions.
- Console Gaming offers a variety of console systems for classic and contemporary electronic games, with drop-in play & tournaments.
- Want to borrow & try a game? VCON Game Library is open during core gaming hours. Both familiar classics and newer games to chose from.
- Panel Discussions are VCON’s bread and butter, with pros, experts, and fans discussion and debating among themselves and the audience.
- Interactive activities and hands-on making workshops are happening for crafters. Frankenstuffies and Monster Stomp are among them.
- There’s no science fiction without science. This year our Science Track comes with a Science of Hitchhikers’ Guide academic sub-track.
- See Live Shows happening at the con–theatre, comedy, game shows, music, lightning talks, and who knows what else?
- Costume Contest is the place for costumers and cosplayers and their fans–every year always high-quality costumes and performances.
- The Hospitality Room is a place to relax, unwind, meet and mingle with guests and fellow fans. Cold food by donation, hot food concession and a cash bar.
- Saturday Night Dance is the place to move your feet to favourite tunes, in between a variety of performances throughout the evening.
- 3 Writers’ Workshops, 1 each day, for members to get feedback on their work in progress from pro writers and editors. *PRE-REG REQ.*
- Kidcon Programming–programming aimed at children throughout each day is included throughout each day within the general tracks.
- Attend with friends and save with early group registration: only $55 per person group rate (group of 4 or more) ($75 regular).
- Lower rates for youth (7-12), teens (13-18), adult students, seniors (65+) and individuals with special needs. Children < 7 free.
- VCON 42 is highly transit-accessible, just a couple of blocks from No. 3 Road where the Skytrain stations and buses are.
- Highly-discounted hotel convention group rate available for several days before & after VCON dates. SEP 13 IS LAST DAY TO BOOK!
- Reserve a room and save on registration with our “Special Venue General Membership” of $55 (regular $75). Up to 4 people per room.
- If you reserve a room at the venue hotel, you can stay and play as late as you want without worrying about transit or driving home.
- Even for locals, book a room for a private place to nap, shower, change clothes or costumes, store your stuff, and stash your loot.
- Advertising Opportunities–have a business with goods or services that appeal to fans? We have Program Book Ads and Swag Bag Inserts.
- An ad in our Program Book or items in our registration Swag Bags puts your information in front of hundreds of highly receptive eyes.
- Our Program Book is distributed to 800+ convention members during the convention. Both b&w and colour ad options are available.
- Our Swag Bags are distributed to our attendees when they pick up their badges. Have your fliers or promotional items in the bags.
- VCON is the oldest (since 1971) 100% fan-oriented and fan-run general-interest science fiction and fantasy convention in Canada!
