The Vancouver Convention of Science Fiction and Fantasy has been gathering sci-fi and fantasy culture since 1971. We are open-interest, celebrating inclusively literature, art, media, music, costumes, comics, gaming, and onwards.
We are entirely volunteer-run: we pour in our love and attention and take no monetary profit.

VCON 37 is September 28-30, 2012 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey.

VCON 37:
Post-Apocalypse

is bringing you the end of the world:
with friends!

Prepare yourself.

Join us!

There are multiple ways to participate:

Buying a membership will give you access to the whole convention. Registering and booking your room early helps cover our costs early, so we can have better stuff for the con! We also offer swag packages and student/youth/senior discounts.

Volunteering with us directly involves you in whatever aspect of the convention interests you, big or small, on-site or beforehand.

Book your room!

We have a new hotel this year! We'll be at the Guildford Sheraton (15269 104th Avenue) in Surrey, 10 minutes from Surrey Central Station. Shuttles available!

It's only $99 for a huge room with a King or Two Queen beds, at double, triple or quadruple occupancy! Free parking, free internet, hot tub, and a heated outdoor pool. Book now.

Join the Conversation!

Our new forums are open! Got suggestions? Please join us and offer your thoughts on what panels and other events should be run at VCON!

Want to host a panel?

Professionals who would like to be considered as VCON 37 panelists may send a bio and personal write-up to Pauline Walsh at programming@vcon.ca.

Panel suggestions and requests can be discussed in the forums.

Sponsor VCON!

VCON is run by the not-for-profit WCSFA society. We offer paid sponsorship of all our materials, including the newsletter, in the form of ads. This helps to offset costs and fund the convention.

If you have a product or service that you would like to promote to hundreds of science fiction and fantasy fans, please visit our Advertising page or contact advertising@vcon.ca.

The VCONversation continues...

May is here: flowers and a warm breeze, designed to lure you out into the fresh air. Spring is in our faces, and summer’s even on its way! And of course, now’s when we get to see a new batch of movies released, designed to entrap us before the outdoors become too enticing.

Even I’ve ventured out to the movies once or twice in the past month or so. There were a few leftover free advance passes from a VCON 37 contest, and some of us, myself included, got to see Joss Whedon’s new Cabin in the Woods!

My humble objective opinion?

GO SEE IT!!!

And whatever you do, don’t watch any trailers. Hit your friends repeatedly if they try to rant about it. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a horror movie so much.

In this edition, we’ve got multiple articles on movies to help you decide whether or not it’s safe to leave your computer screen. Michael Walsh gives his own take on Cabin in the Woods, while Uncle Victor tackles the yet-to-be-released new Spider-man movie and The Avengers. And keep an eye on our contests to win stuff!

Last but not least, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Events like VCON run entirely on volunteers, and we’re running short this year. ConCept in Montreal is recently dead for lack of people like you and me to help out. We’re looking for all types of help, big and small, now and during the con.

Help us stay alive in the face of the apocalypse! We have letters of recommendation, resume buffing, and the undying gratitude of 400+ fans to offer in return.

In this issue...

  • T-shirt Art Design Contest
  • VCON Awards Hour
  • Review of Cabin in the Woods
  • Sequelitis?
  • Put your baking caps on!
  • The Avengers: worth the wait and hype?

T-shirt Art Design Contest!

A Call to all Artistic Fans and Members!
How would you like to see YOUR t-shirt design on OUR t-shirt?

We have learned that the VCON 37 Artist Guest of Honour, James Ng, won't be able to provide art for this year's t-shirt. We are, of course, saddened by this, but life must go on and we do need a design... and so we're opening it up to you!

The winning artist will receive one of "their" t-shirts in the size and the colour (if multiple colours are offered) of their choosing AND a $50 cash prize.

So start doodling up some apocalyptic designs! Read more...

VCON Awards Hour

Have you ever attended the Awards Hour at VCON? This is a special event absolutely unique to VCON and found nowhere else.

It features half an hour devoted to the infamous ELRON Awards followed by a half hour assigned to the equally coveted FANED Awards.

Let me tell you what makes them unique. Read more...

Cabin in the Woods review

Joss Whedon, the writer, director, and dreamer who gave the world Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has a genuine love of genre and a talent for mockery.

How does his long-awaited new movie fare? Michael Walsh tells us, with some background. Read more...

Sequelitis?

How have they managed to come up with another Spider-Man movie?

How is making sequels like re-inventing the wheel?

Uncle Victor has the answers. Read more...

The Cookie Contest returns!

Put your baking caps on!

VCON's 2nd Annual Cookie Taste-Off will take place on Saturday afternoon in the Hospitality Suite. Depending on the submissions, we might even try for TWO categories: Best In Show and Best SF/F Theme.

I know we have creative bakers in our midst: let's see what you can do!

More info will appear on the Hospitality page of VCON 37's website. Meanwhile, enjoy the good weather, but don't forget to bake something delicious every so often!

The Avengers: Worth the wait and hype?

Joss Whedon, along with the release of his new horror-comedy Cabin in the Woods, has just released the even-more-anticipated new Avengers movie.

Does it live up to expectations? What did we expect, anyhow?

Uncle Victor has his say. Read more...
