Hello!

I was a displaying artist at Victoria Steam Expo and was approached at the show by a VCon representative who suggested I show at VCon as well. I'm trying to figure out though, where exactly should I be registering? Artists Alley? Dealers Room? What exactly is the difference?

I build guitars, steampunk prop weaponry, back mounted wings, and other assorted gear and was just sort of wondering where I fit in? I only need one 6x3 table and I can provide my own stands for hanging some of my other stuff.

Also, in the VCon paperwork I was given, it says that the rate for full tables is $20, but now on the website it says $35. Which is correct?

It also seems that even though I will be attending as an exhibitor one way or another, that I still have to purchase a pass for $50? Is there no discounted rate for artists/vendors?

Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon!

Where to Show your Art

Hi "Steampunk22"!

Let me try to answer a few of your questions here.

There are three ways someone can exhibit and sell artistic merchandise at VCON. The Dealers Room, the Artists Alley and the Art Show. The differences are as follows:

Dealers Room
This is more or less a "General Fan Shopping Mall" where we allow merchants to sell the kind of brick-a-brack that appeals to the average science-fiction and fantasy fan (books, comics, memorabilia, T-shirts, costumes, games, or what-have-you). An artist who sells more than just their own artwork would also fall into this category. Merchants may book up to three tables in the Dealers Room for $50 each.
Artists Alley
This area is aimed at artists of all kinds (art prints, original artwork, comic books, etc.) who want to showcase their art and sell their work directly. Artists are expected to be at their table each day of the convention and to show off their skills and process by doing drawings live and in person. Artists may book up to three tables in the Artists Alley for $35 each.
Art Show
This is a non-juried art exhibit and all types of art, within certain parameters, are welcome. Items may include sketches, paintings, castings, etchings, multi-media pieces, fabric art and sculptures of all types including cast metals. Examples of the kind of art we show are those that are about the fantastic past, present or future; that are imaginative, creative and/or thought provoking; that are a new view of an old idea; etc. All art is displayed for the full weekend and may be offered for sale by auction (held on Sunday), at a set price, both or neither. There is a 10% commission charged on all sales. Artists with flat art may reserve up to two 4'x4' panels at $15 each. Artists with 3D art may reserve one 3'x6' table at $20 or one 3'x3' half table at $10. There is also a print shop where you may place up to five copies of any one print, even if you don't reserve a panel or a table.

Merchants who will be selling items or artwork from the Dealers Room or the Artists Alley are required to have someone managing their table during all hours that the merchant areas are open (Fri 2p-7p, Sat 10a-7p, Sun 10a-2p) which may be themself or an assistant. As anyone managing a merchant table is on site and does have full access to all our programming they must have a VCON membership that is valid for the times that they are pressent at the convention.

Artists exhibiting in the Art Show do not require a separate membership unless they also want to attend the convention, as they are not required to be in the art gallery (which is overseen by the Art Show Director and her assistants).

(Based on where you learned about VCON, I know that you must have received information directly from the VCON Art Show Director, and that would only be because she thought your art would be appropriate for the Art Show. Unless you would like to attend as a merchant with a table in the Artists Alley or Dealers Room, you should review our Art Show page and then register as an exhibiting artist.)
